MIKE BARRIS is a New Jersey-based swing, blues and roots guitarist whose influences range from Chet Atkins to B.B. King to Charlie Christian. A champion of the music of Americana, but born and raised in Canada, he has reached audiences at festivals and clubs in both countries. A contributor of articles to Acoustic Guitar and other magazines, Mike excels as a writer at mixing the teaching of a skill with a philosophy based on his practice of yoga. Living near New York City, he also speaks and teaches courses at colleges, high schools and public libraries. His most recent courses are "Perfectly Frank: An Appreciation of the Music of Frank Sinatra," "Promotion and Publicity Tips for Musicians," and "Have Fun and Make Money as a Singer-Guitarist." Mike has released a CD, "Mike Barris & Delta Sunrise: Swingbilly Blues" on the Pannahill Records label. CD garners a rave review from NJ jazz/blues society"Swingbilly Blues" has just won over its latest fan - the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation. In the non-profit organization's largest-ever newsletter, published in June, reviewer Coleen Burnett raves about the CD's "wry sense of humor" and "great musical chops." 'Turnpike Blues' hits road in tri-state area"Talkin' Turnpike Blues," Mike's upbeat ode to life in the not-so-fast lane of the New Jersey Turnpike, is getting its first ride through the Tri-State area's radio-station circuit.

'Makes you want to dance' - Matt Moore, The Associated Press Course salutes Frank SinatraBy the time of his death in 1998 at the age of 82, Frank Sinatra had solidified his place as one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th Century. But what made Sinatra? Join Mike at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., on Mondays Dec. 2 and 9 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. for a two-evening celebration of Sinatra's music. The program, coinciding with the singer's 87th birthday, will explore, among other things, how Nelson Riddle's arrangements helped to transform Sinatra into a matchless song stylist from a boy crooner. Videos showing Sinatra performing such songs as "I've Got You Under My Skin" live, will illustrate his evolution into a giant. Registration will be taken by phone at (732)224-2315, and online at Brookdale A class for new singer-guitaristsHow many times have you gone to a coffeehouse and wished you could trade places with the house folksinger, just for the thrill of it? Regardless of your bag, you'll benefit from Mike's course, "Have Fun and Make Money as a Singer-Guitarist," returning to Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., on Mondays Nov. 4 and 11, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Register by phone at (732)224-2315, or online at Brookdale |
